Its a boy!! (Bull)

January 5th, 2007 at 07:35 pm

Worked out well I guess. This is calf #1 for this year. He is sooo cute, arrived at 8 a.m. Baby and momma are doing well. We will be butchering a steer this April that will last us about a year, so he will be the next one to eat. We have 2 more cows expecting calves soon, hopefully one will be a girl at least, to increase the herd. So, as of now we have 8 cows. Since its a boy, don't know that I want to name him. The one we are getting ready to eat wasn't named. Hard to eat them if they are.

my granparents raised bunnies and wouldn't let us name them for that very reason. hard to eat dinner when you know it's fluffy or bunbun on the plate!

I always named my hogs...........but used brand names for sausage, bacon & ham! ie: Hormel, Jimmy Dean, etc. Was pretty funny when people would ask if they had names; then it would sink in that these critters were headed for the freezer!

My dad named his steer, and then could not eat it, so he and a neighbor traded steers, and ate each other's!

Ahhh! We don't have cattle, but we rent our north 40 acres out to a local farmer. The cows are dropping calves like nobody's business!LOL Yesterday one delivered twins. Unfortunatley one of them died this morningFrown BTW, we have one of the cows butchered every year as part of the rent. I don't tell the kiddo's that it's one of the cows that they feed out of their hands every day!!LOLOLOL

I know what you mean. There was a time that they would sell little chicks at Easter time (they were dyed a color) and someone bought one for me. I was just a little girl and I named the chick Henrietta and later found out that Henrietta was really a Henry. So the story goes that this little chick bought at GC Murphy's Dept store became the biggest deal for all the hens my grandmother had. Life started changing at the house. More eggs and everyone was happy. Henry was a stunning rooster and years later ended up on the dinner table. I did not know this until my sweet little cousin informed me after I had my first bite. That was the end of my dinner that night. Anyway, it is understandable about the name thing.
