Won an argument with2 hospitals

January 11th, 2007 at 05:59 pm

Well, my time arguing with 2 different hospitals was time well spent. Rebeccas stays at the Children's hospital resulted in a bill of $7000, despite the fact we have insurance. After getting itemized bills, and getting statements from the insurance company, and getting mis applied payments on my account straightened out, we now owe $45. This had been going on for over a year.
The other one is from my mamogram. The hospital was charging me $337. I told the woman I already paid my copay, she told me that the insurance didn't pay in full so I was responsible. I called the insurance, and they said no, the hospital signs a contract with the insurance with their rates on it and I was not responsible. She then brought the hospital on the line, and out of the $337, $30 was mine--two $15 copays.
I had a friend once who worked for an insurance company, and they were instructed to deny every 3rd claim...But, now it appears the hospitals can be just as bad!!!

I am too, fighting the stupid insurance companies. The favorite trick they pull on us is not paying and then denying because they want us to send in a letter saying that we have had no other insurance for the last year or so or whatever. I think they do that to see if people will just blindly pay bills that come in and not check. I am soooo frustrated with the stupid buggers! Does she go the childrens hospital in st. Louis?

No, Kansas City. It made me so mad. I talked to 3 different people in the office over the last year, plus lots of letters. But, it seems the trick was to get the insurance company involved. Bingo, it was a different story once the insurance company called the hospital billing dept. The gal at the hospital didn't realize I was also on the line!

Congrats! Up to 90% of hospital bills contain errors. We had our own experience recently. My wife had surgery in September. Our share of the bill came to $4,300. I got an itemized bill (which I think they should be required to send automatically) and I found an error - an item was charged in triplicate. It took a few weeks and a few phonecalls, but they finally confirmed what I was saying. That reduced the bill by $1,040. Then, as standard practice, they offered a 35% discount if I would pay the bill in full. I did, so that brought the final bill to about $2,100. Had I not taken the time to investigate and had just paid the first bill, I would have overpaid by $2,200.

Oh my gosh! It is crazy! I had to request the itemized bill from my hospital after my husbands surgery. Luckily we just flat out paid a $5000 deductible and everything else was covered. Otherwise, I never look at an itemized bill.
