What am I doing wrong??

June 28th, 2007 at 05:24 am

I have listed several things on Craigslist. I list them for my husband, and I get a response. I list them for me, and don't get a single response. I have been trying to see a bunch of paperback books. Over 300 of them. All I want is $25 for them all. I have been stood up about 7 times over the last 4 months of selling them. Yet, I see people selling smaller lots for more money. They get what they ask because then their ad says gone, or sold on it.
No luck selling a bunch of little girls size 6 clothes, summer and fall-2 laundry baskets full for $25. Some still had tags on them. very nice, excellant condition. No luck selling leap pad books and the cartridges for them. No luck selling a bunch of kids books. No luck selling school uniforms-yet one in a "stained" condition listed by another ebayer went for big bucks--same uniform, same size......
I also listed the stuff on ebay, no response-I have perfect feedback on ebay also.
I was doing real good, then its like I am invisible all of a sudden. I had pictures on the ads. Took me several hours to get them to upload, but they were there.

that happens to me too, i guess it's just the luck of the draw. you could try selling smaller lots of the clothes - some people might not want to buy big quantities, same with the books. have you searched the want it now ads in ebay? sometimes people just dont see some stuff, its hard looking for things on ebay, its like shopping in a supermarket, you go in for one thing, they dont have it, but you walk out with a bunch of other things anyway!

Do you have a friend who buys a lot of stuff on Craigslist? Perhaps that person can give you feedback on whether your ad is appealing or not.

Do you post all your ads all at once and wait? Maybe spacing them out over a few days keeps you from looking like spam. In addition, I'm told by DJ friend (a master at buying and selling on Craigslist), that once an ad ages by a day or two, no one calls because at best, they assume that the item's sold. At worst, its fallen to the second page which no one bothers to paw through.

Also want to post on Craigslist when you know your target audience is reading. DJ friend sells electronics and DJ equipment. All nightowls. He posts at night, when he knows his audience is searching.

He also, I think, prefers phone negotiation over email. If you're calling, you're serious and you want it. Email tends to attract the un-committed.

Maybe you should try the smaller lots. While 300 for $25 is a great deal, most folks would think "Where am I going to PUT them all?!?".

Plus, there's the oddball phenomenon where if the price is TOO low people think it's too good to be true, the books are in bad shape, etc.

Maybe try 50 for $10 (earns you $60), or 20 for $5 (earns you $75).

Since you seem to have quite a few items, you might think about selling eveything in a yard sale. There are alot of people who are looking to buy books. People buy them for .50 each and you can advertise that you have a large assortment of books to choose from.

Not sure if any of these locations are close to you or are places you might be visiting for other reasons, but here is a link to Half Price Books, Kansas/Missouri locations:

    http://www.halfpricebooks.com/kansas_missouri.html

The nice thing about Half Price Books is that they will take ALL of your books and will pay you in cash. They don't necessarily pay top dollar, but it's a good way to get rid of all your unwanted books at once and get some $.
