About Me

Two years ago I quit my job of 20 years to remarry, move and become a "farm wife". For the most part, I am now a stay at home mom (with the exception of a few temp. odd jobs and sub teaching here and there).

As of the 2007 school year, we are now a homeschooling family.

We also farm. Our farms include a large garden, haying, horses, cows, geese, chickens, ducks, rabbits, 2 stocked ponds, small vinyard and an orchard.

We live at the main farm (the one with the animals) and our other farm is currently growing hay, nuts and firewood to harvest this fall.
In the spring we will be adding sheep, pigs and turkeys.

We have 5 daughters, (including 2 sets of twins) 3 who are still at home.

I love to camp, travel, garden, fish, bake, do needlework, sew, genelogy and ride horses. One of my favorite places to travel to is Northern Indiana (LaGrange county), where I have Amish cousins and to learn about my ancestors.

My goal is to help this family stay on track financially and to stay out of debt, other than our mortgage.

Fire

In the middle of my last post, I sent the kids outside for a 20 minute recess. They came back in sceaming fire.

The chicken coop was burning. We got it out-used up 2 fire extinguishers and the hose. The hay in it had caught on fire. It appears to have been electrical caused--the cord to a heat lamp (that was not on) was all melted with bare copper showing. It was a fairly new heat lamp also.

We have 4 chickens who are having trouble breathing, and we lost the bedding in it. Structural damage was minor-I probably can find some scrap lumber to do the repair work with. But, the water in it is having trouble draining out, so it may rot it out...

What a day.

Growing up, we had a tractor catch fire when mowing the dry grasses. And, we had a field catch fire (we think someone might have accidently started that one--we had hunters sometimes behind us) and that is a scary thing thinking that it might spread before it gets put out! So glad you got the fire out before too much damage! Hopefully, the feathery gals will recover soon!

It's a good thing you sent your kids out for a break when you did! I'm glad the fire didn't do any more damage - quick recovery to the little ladies.
