$ invested, rather than spent

May 26th, 2008 at 06:24 pm

At least in my opinion it was an investment.

We have an orchard, with about 12 trees in it and room for about 12-16 more, plus a small vineyard. Each year we try to add more to it. Yesterday we went to Lowe's and bought 1 plum, 1 peach, 3 grapes and 2 blueberrys. We will try to plant them between rain showers today.

I say its an investment, as it will raise the property value of our farm to have the orchard and vineyard, and we also will be getting the fruit to eat, can and perhaps sell.

So far we have several apple, 3 peach, 2 plum.

We lost and need to replace cherry and pear.

We also have 2 types of grapes and blueberries, and are planning on putting in strawberry beds in the next week or so as well.

    I am not a berry, or a fruit person, for that matter - but I say it does sound like a great investment! =) And I am sure your farm is lovely!! We are in the SW, so our trees consist of Lemon and Lime, the two things my hispanic husband can not do without! lol... =)

    Definitely an investment for many reasons - fruit, dried fruit, liquor ( Big Grin ), windbreak, probably cools your property. If the trees get large enough or old enough if they die the wood can be used for furniture, firewood, or barbeque chips. If you are the only folks around with fruit trees, the fruit can be used for barter. Love the idea of grapes and blueberries. Also, kiwi, gooseberries, raspberries, currants, rhubarb (not a fruit). We used to pick and eat mulberries from the mulberry tree.

    Thought of nuts? Walnuts, pecans, hickory...yum.
    And with all that flowering...bees. Big Grin

    That sounds so nice!! A friend I had as a kid had a small orchard in their backyard and I loved it. I would love to have one of those one day.

    I have really added to our garden this year. In addition to my tomatos, peppers, onions, cukes, squash, zucchini and lettuce, I have also added red/black raspberry's with a wonderful trelace system my dad and I built, a strawberry patch with about 70 plants, two blueberry bushes and pole beans.

    My wife is excited about all the pies and jams she can make and I of course just love veggies, along with the kids. YUMMYYYY! God bless all!
