I'm firing up the old lady!

March 26th, 2009 at 05:43 pm

Last week I got Ol Betty out of her storage parking spot (by the barn) and drove her around to the front garage. Now, before you imange me driving an old woman with a whip, let me explain that Ol Betty is my 99 Chevy Suburban. I parked her when gas went over $4 a gallon. I then bought my manual Chevy Aveo which gets 34-37 mpg. So, she has been parked except for a few trips around the farm to check fences and to keep her battery and spirit up.

But, I miss Ol Betty. The kids have more room in Betty and she has a TV and lots of storage room (think going to Aldi for a stockup in a hatch back with 3 kids.....or in a pickup on a sunny calm with food blowing in the back as it starts to rain from no where.......)

Now I am watching 2 little ones, that is 5 kids and the Aveo will only hold a total of 5. Dare I let them go off without me??? NO.

DH broke Bettys mirror--playing ball with the dog. So, for $12.95 I got her a new mirror off of ebay (brand new-correct color and everything). At 2:30 she has an appointment to get inspected, then we will go to the license bureau.

I just hope she passes. Her tires are border line. She has better tires, but they aren't on her. I want to drive her tomorrow, but DH is working so can't put her other tires on till Sunday. I refuse to pay the $60 to swap out her tires at the inspection shop.

My insurance company has a program now where they only charge insurance when you drive the vehicle. I need her every other Friday. So I will pay full coverage every other Friday, and reduced coverage the rest of the time.

She is a good looking truck. Black and shiny with lots of chrome and all the extras. She came from the KC Cheifs--used to pull the PR trailer to events around town, then I bought her in 2003. She pulled the first camper we had through over half our states, showing my daughters and I our land. She is ready to go again!

Ah, you brought back memories of me and another woman plus our preschoolers trying to do a whole month's shopping for 2 families at Aldi's using a Toyota Tercel...That is interesting about your insurance plan. Can you activate it for as little as one day?

Yes! She passed. I can change the tires on her, but since she is a 4 wheel drive, and big, I don't. DH can though. He has an air compressor and tools for it and jacks, so he can do it quickly. I, on the other hand can change it if I have to. But, the tires for it are large and heavy to lift. But, if I was stuck on the side of the road and the auto club was not available, I could do it. It is much easier to change the tires on my little Aveo, and quicker.

After I got it inspected, I went to the courthouse and got the required proof of property tax receipts. It was a little confusing because I needed it for 07 and 08, and I married in 06, but the county messed up and it was on my old county for 07, so I had to get an exempt letter for 07 from this county. Then I went and got it licensed and to the gas station. I had run most of the fuel out of it, as it was 2 years old. So I tanked up and then promptly got pulled over by the local yocal. He pulled me over because I had an expired tag...So, after showing him the paperwork, I was off the hook (in MO you have 12-24 hours to get it on the vehicle). But, he felt kind of funny after I pointed out to him that I was the same lady who was in line in front of him at the court house and he was parked right beside me at the license bureau......He just watched me get it all done. He turned beet red and started to apoligize--said "I didn't even notice" .....
I went by the tire place-they want $153 per tire for her. NOT. But she will need some new ones by next winter.
Yes, in answer to the above question--I can insure her for just one day. They said the program was orginally designed for people who are moving a stored vehicle or hunters who have an old truck they only use to hunt in every spring, or farmers who have a grain truck they only use a couple days a year. I just have to remember to call or go online and stop and start the full coverage.

Oh man! I love our 1974 suburban. DH made me park it. I so miss it. I am glad it passed!

That is really cool how you can have your insurance do that one day at a time thing.

It goes to show how observant that cop was that he didn't even recognize you from the courthouse. LOL!

My baby is a 97 Honda Civic and she's still going strong. Big Grin
