$600 for propane

December 15th, 2007 at 12:46 am

Thanks to ImaSaver...I read ours and called in an order for propane. That was about 50 minutes ago. And, he has already come and filled it. His dispatcher called him just as he was approaching our road on his way home. He had just made another delivery on past us aways. The timing could not have been more perfect he said. It came right at $600. Actually we had enough to go for probably another 2 weeks, but with more bad weather coming, I was afraid he may not be able to get into the grass to get to the tank. Plus, my parents are coming next week, and my dad keeps it warmer than he used to. (age and arthritis...)

Glad you got in time, before the storm

Me too, I am always afraid we will run out. we did one time, while we were living in a travel trailer. It was only 7 degrees outside and not much warmer inside!

How does the cost of propane compare to the cost of oil, gas or electric, do you know? Just wondering.

Propane is $1.54 a gallon if you bought it at the summer contract price or 1.99 for the current price. That is cheaper than gas, diesel or kerosene. And much more efficient for us than an electric furnace. The furnace stayed on during our power outage, although we had no electric fan or blower to circulate it with. However, we could have hooked the generator up to run the blower (if the generator had not been at the brother in laws...) or even run the blower of the power inverter on the truck. An electric furnace would have been more complicated to connect to a generator and too much of a draw to run off the truck battery.
Another advantage to propane is we still had plenty of hot water, as our hotwater heater is propane. So, no matter how cold we could still take a warm shower, bath or do dishes to warm up.
We were lucky, our fireplace kept the house at a constant temp. We were 65 during the days and 55 at night. Not bad when it was in the teens outside.
