Here piggy piggy

February 7th, 2009 at 01:52 am

Today the girls and I went and picked up a used hog hut. I paid $125. New ones are $800. This one is in very good condition.

DH uncle gave us some hog and combination panels as he is once again retiring from farming (he's 'retired' several times.) DH already had a feeder, so I am set to go. I only need warmer weather and pigs!

I had one farmer tell me it would take me $1000-$2000 to set for pigs. But, he didn't know me very well.

Bacon in the freezer!

Good job! When I was a kid, we raised pigs, but we didn't pasture them with hog huts like a lot of people do. We had a 12x12 pen with log skids on the bottom and a chain, so we just would hook the tow hitch from the tractor to the chain and pull it down another 15 feet every weekend so the pigs got fresh grass without ruining the whole hay field.

    bacon! Bacon!!! BACON!!!!!!!

(couldn't resist mimicing the doggie treat commercial)

Raising pigs = easy food! Done it many times, we just had a barn w/a side entrance for them to get out of the weather, a young child (myself) to go out and run the water hose a bit each day for them to have a place to mud up, and a daily run out of the combo meal - slop & feed.

    Viola - BACON!!!!!!!!!! Yummm!

My oldest grandson, who is in 4-H, raises pigs and shows them at the fair. He has done it for two years, and each year (3rd and 4th grades) his pigs were sold, and he got an average of $3,500 for each. This money is going to be his college fund, and he has many years left in 4-H, so it is really a great way for kids to earn their own college tuition. Next year, his younger brother will be in 3rd grade, and will start showing pigs too. With six kids in the family, this has been a blessing!
