What do you think of this?

January 30th, 2007 at 08:37 pm

I took some stuff to the Ministers Alliance today. (donations-clothing, boots, coats & some plates--its a place for low income or fire/robbery victims to replenish). I was telling one of the volunteers there that I was planning on doing some childcare at my home-up to 4 kids.

Her idea was, since I live on a farm, advertise it as a "farm daycamp" during the summer months. Kids can learn about farm animals & help feed them, get to ride in the tractor (its safe-enclosed cab with-2 seats) meals and snacks provided, let them each have a section in the garden, and to do my lessons all around farm life.. Would you pay $125 a week for a 2-3 year old or $90 for a kid 4-12 to do this?? Would your kid enjoy it?

I had already planned some nearby field trips this summer that would fit right it, such as to the zoo, the local dairy and bottling plant, a local potato & pumpkin farm.

So, parents--would this appeal to you as a parent??

Since I grew up on a farm, I would have loved it for my kids to have a farm camp! DD would have loved it!

I think this a great idea! We charge this much weekly at the center I work and we don't even take field trips. I would definitely send my kids Smile Keep us updated on how this works out for you!

i love the idea. What part of the country do you live in? if you live in an area like the northeast that is losing many of its farms, the novelty of farm life daycamp will seem like a novel idea. If you live in Kansas, maybe not.

$90-$125 per week is pretty inexpensive. A good home childcare provider (in my area) can charge $30-$50/day without all of the goodies you're adding in. Have you looked into average prices in your area?

your rates are pretty inexpensive. i know someone who does it in her home for that much with out allthe activiteis you mentioned. but then again she is on her second children (bro and sis of past kids).

check with your stae about licensing, field trips permission forms etc. and about the reimbursement forms for meals and such. keep good records and make it a licensed business otherwise the insurance angle will kill you. have you looked into it as far as state licensing and agencies go? you might want to increase your fees just a little to cover the gas and such at the field trips you will provide.

That is the going rate for our area. 20 miles down the road and its double that.

I am registered with the state. By being registered, I can take kids who are on state assisted daycare. The state knows I am here, and so do all the local emergency agencies (fire, law, ambulance).

I am not licensed. In MO, you are licensed if you have more than 4 unrelated (to you) children at the same time.

Years ago, I used to have a center, licensed for 76 kids with 17 staff members.

Registered as a home daycare is much more laid back, more for a home envirment.-Licensing requires you to mop the floor after every meal and before opening with bleach water. Registered says its your home-keep it clean. Little differences like that.

Licensed says you must advertise your hours and only take kids during that time frame. State can come and visit anytime

Registered says I can take kids 24 hours, as long as I only have 4 or less. If you pull a night shift, I can take your kid even though I may not normally have kids at that hour. State can still come and visit, but won't in the middle of the night because it is a home.

Sounds like a great idea! Would you do it year round or just on winter/spring/summer school breaks?

I'm thinking just for the summer. I have 2 weeks this summer that are already committed to being dorm mom at church camp. If I used this approach, as a "day camp" and advertised the available weeks, I would not have to worry about the camp weeks. Parents could sign up for a week or month. I'd be fine, just not to go over 4 kids a day.

Your idea seems to me great because I am one of the parents who work all day long at a firm who is dealing with small business funding. I don’t have too much time for my kids, so leaving them at a farm where they can spend some time in a pleasant and useful way, it’s a good idea that can help me.
