Bad News

November 13th, 2007 at 05:16 pm

I just received several emails that a daughter of one of our local homeschooling families is missing from Independence MO. She is not in our coop, but her coop does things with ours, such as skating and bowling monthly. She was out walking in Independence and is now gone. She is only 17. She is a very well behaved girl, good friends, not the type to run away. They have pinged her cell phone and narrowed it down and gone over that area once so far, they have not found her or the phone. But to me that does not sound good-no teen would go off without their phone. Please pray for her family. Her name is DAffny Star Velder. This is her senior year.

Oh dear. Did it happen today? Do you know whether the police are involved yet? I haven't heard a missing child alert and I've had the radio on since I woke up. I'm on the other side of the state from Independence, but our cities are connected by a major highway.

You know, there has been a certain public willingness to be suspicious of homeschooling families and to prejudge both the kids and the parents in a variety of negative ways. This can affect the thoughts of people who would be responsible for helping to find a missing child. I would say a 17 year old homeschooled girl can go missing for any of the same reasons as any other child. The child can suffer just as much and the parents grieve and panic just as thoroughly.

This happened Saturday. Police have been involved. There is an amber alert out, but it was delayed for some techinical reason. She went to walk her dog around 1 p.m. 30 minutes later the dog came back without her. Pings show the cell phone is in a field-no where near where she would have been with the dog. Police suspect foul play. They may suspect a truck driver??? They are looking into truck routes from Indpendence to Whiticha and Independence to Columbia, as well as all truck stops and hotels along the route. Channel 9 news, from KCMO is following the story

I have a daughter, so this type of thing worries me as well. I truly hope she will return safe. I will pray for the family.

They are still searching. The amber alert was removed--apprently it is to only be used for those under the age of 17.
The volunteers and family are now asking for help from those with search dogs. The PD is also still searching.

Please keep us informed. Is there someplace we can go to see what she looks like? (You never know where in the country someone might have taken her...)

I added a bulletin to my Myspace page with the news link on it and sent it to everyone on my email list. You never know; someone might recognize her.

I don't know computerwise what I need to do to turn the above into an actual link, but that will get you to her picture and the website.

I am so glad to hear that Daffny has been found. I live in Jacksonville, FL and was talking to one of our clients up there and she told me what was going on. I sent out emails to all of my praying friends and asked them to keep the child and family in prayer. I was praying that GOD would not have another angle go home too early and as HE is always faithful, she was found.

I am a mother and grandmother and can not even venture to think what was going through her parents head. I will continue to keep them in prayer.
