Evidently, I am not an adult....

April 8th, 2008 at 08:07 pm

DD5 wanted to do a science experiment, but started crying. I asked her what her problem was, and she told me the book said she had to have an adult present and since my husband was sleeping, she could not do it....

What am I? Chopped liver???

The highschool had 4 boys hang themselves almost 2 weeks ago at the school. 2 died. Students have been told they are NOT to discuss it in public. Kids have told me counselers have not been brought it. It has not been on the news. I feel that as a parent and a tax payer have the right to know this. Earlier this school year another boy also hung himself. The boys have ranged in age from 8th grade thru 12th.

I find this rather disturbing in a small town of less than 3000.

Several more families have now pulled their kids out of school to homeschool as a result. One parent told me she has notified the state board of education about the happenings. What is this world coming to?

oh dear, the repression of such shock cannot be good. I cannot imagine. You are talking about it with your kids, yes? and already home school. Mine go to a good school, but it's not the school, it's other issues. And I am so not knowledgeable/educated to even know what to do.

*sigh*, chopped liver is one of my favs, don't worry

Oh, my gosh! Are there no local news outlets? I do think that needs to be in the community news. The public needs to know that the deaths are being investigated as should any non-natural death. I think this is very, very important. And the "gag rule" on the kids is misguided. Oh, my! What a way to nurture anger and distrust in the young people and, heck. anyone who hears about it!

Who has told them not to talk? I have to be a bit skeptical and wonder whether the person (principal? School director?) actually has something to cover up.

If you can't get info from local news, I think it important for the public to make calls directly to your sherrif or what ever unit of police is responsible there. Also to county commission, mayor, whomever! Make your own flyers to at least minimally educate other people about the incident if need be. Perhaps a coalition of pastors can pressure for normal handling of the investigation and release of news to the community.

I hope all the professional people closely involved come to their senses today.

Obviously, I have no knowledge of why the boys did what they did, but it might have been accidental, while trying to get a sexual high. I think adults don't want to talk about this because it might give other kids the urge to try it. The object is not to die, but it certainly does happen. I know a family that lost their 12 year old son, at home, this way. The parents knew nothing about this "game" but the kids knew. This was a long time ago. It has been happening for a very long time with adolescent boys. It is very sad.

A few years ago, there was a teenage boy at my high school that died this way. (I had just went to college) I am from a small town too, and so it was big news, especially because he was from a big family in the community. There were rumors that it was from the same type of cause... but nobody wanted to talk about it because it was that much worse for the family. Very disturbing!

I agree that you should be concerned with the school not providing counselors and for telling the kids to not discuss the situation in public. The only reason I could see to stop the news from spreading would be to attempt to prevent copycat suicides. Studies have shown that can happen. But since the at risk group (the kids) already know this situation occurred, I really don't think that would be the reason behind the school's actions.

I am glad your neigbor reported this to the state! This happened AT THE SCHOOL? Yikes! And what an age spread too. Highly disturbing. Why would the school want to cover it up?? Keep us posted on this one!!

Yes, these hangings happened inside the school building, in a locker room. They were discovered by other students.

I'd say the school is covering it up to avoid bad pr and because they just build a huge new building, and if people move out of the district, they won't have the tax dollars to pay for it.

The boys obits have not even appeared in the paper, although the funerals have happened. School went right on like nothing happened.

When I was in school, we had a student a year die due to illness or sickness from 8th grade on. People came in to talk to us and the day of the funeral school was out, yet buses were at the school to take students to the funeral.

One rumor is that the kids were trying to get even with a teacher.

    Guess times have changed.

How awful. Perhaps (just to give the benefit of the doubt) the school is keeping it quiet for the sake of the families, although that is absolutely NO reason not to have counselors available or to acknowledge that it happened, especially right on school grounds. We also lost two students (siblings) in a car accident when I was in 10th grade and basically, our small school shut down for a day to let the students grieve. I was very grateful at the time to not have to pretend that nothing was wrong.

That is very disturbing and traumatic to the community. I hope that the school acknowledges how harmful it is to not talk about and deal with this matter before it gets worse.
