Sign of the times??

January 24th, 2009 at 08:09 pm

My last visit to Aldi, I noticed some changes.

Used to be, most people I saw bought aldi bags (at 5 cents each). I rarely saw others who like myself, took their own bags or, like I do, laundry basket....
Last visit, most people walking in were carrying cloth reusable bags.

The parking lot acutally had a couple of caddys, bmws, a corvet and a hummer in it, in addition to other nice cars. Used to be years ago, older cars.

The store had a lot of people in it--it was packed. Most were nicely dressed working type of people. In the past I have seen more along the lines of retired persons or younger starting out families. Now I see the working in there more than before.

Used to see a lot of food stamp cards--last few visits I have only seen one being used--

I think Alid is starting to collect a different sort of customer now.

On a different note, I am supposed to be sleeping. I stayed awake till 4 am so I could sleep today, as tonight we have an all night non sleeping girl scout even. Yet, I am wide awake by 10:30 this morning...

I'll never make it tonight...

Have fun tonight!! Smile I have noticed even Aldi's prices have gone up. Some things substantially. Ugh.

I live in the Bay Area, CA, in a middle to upper middle class suburb, and I see more and more people using the reusable grocery bags. I for one use them and I use them simply because it is better for the environment. As for the cars in the parking lot, most of what I see people driving nowdays are big gas guzzlin' SUV's.

Yes, I know what you mean. I went to Aldi in my town one day and saw someone who works at the same college I do. Mind you this would not be unusual except that he's a tenured professor and has been working at the college for over 30 years. I had to ask myself why he needs to shop at Aldi. But I have to remind myself that he may be nearing retirement and wants to save every dime he can.

It could be that he "needs" to shop at Aldi's or it could be that he wants to. I think the popularity of newscasts about people saving money using coupons or shopping at stores like Aldi's has a lot of people waking up to the fact that being frugal doesn't mean you have to hide it or be ashamed of it. It's now the "in" thing to do (and I'm sure just saying that makes me sound ancient because I'm sure there is a newer, better, hipper, cooler word than saying it's the "in" thing!) LOL

I have been shopping at Aldi for 3 or 4 years. I have always seen newer and/or higher end model cars in the parking lot and most of the people had their own bags and/or boxes.

I have noticed the same thing at Winco, well not the reusable bags, but definitely nicer dressed people than normal shopping.

Yes, more people are shopping for groceries. I feel for the restaurant owners. On our last visit to Costco, on a weekday, it was packed! Quick peeks in others' carts revealed only staples (food, TP, cleaning stuff) and no extras. I saw a woman at the book table writing down titles of books in a little note pad ... First time I saw someone other than me doing that. Did she plan to check them out later from the library as I do?

Oh gosh scfr, that's what I do too, the books, actually authors.
