I have a speaking engagement on being thrifty!!

May 12th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

I have been asked to speak to a group later this month on couponing and being thrifty. It is to a group of about 45 seniors. The majority of them are NOT computer savy, so I have been asked to give ways to save that do not involved the computer. Some can't/don't drive.

I have started a rough list of topics to cover--any additions or ideas are welcome.

Aldi
CVS/WALGREEN/Dollar General savings
coupons
traveling savings
utility savings
cooking from scratch

    wow!
i would probably advocate making price books and keeping a notebook of daily recorded expenses?
ummm... investing in a bicycle for health and transport savings? or walking if can't ride.
maybe suggesting that they call each of their providers to see if they can get senior discounts, and researching what stores offer senior discounts.

Cool! How about Angel Food ministries, rebates, clothing/gift swaps, saving money on electricity with CFL bulbs or other things like that?

Wow! I'd be so nervous. Kind of like preaching to the choir. These folks probably remember the Great Depression and could teach us a thing or two about being frugal. They probably know all about seniors' discounts and coupons.
What would not bore them? Hmmm.
    How about:
    - Ways to save on banking fees.
    - Seniors days at various stores.
    - A chart or list showing what produce is seasonal for the different times of the year, and therefore cheaper.
    - The $20 challenge that you participate in.

I hope that was helpful and not annoying.

Thrift store shopping, especially on half price days.
First Wednesday discounts at some grocery stores. Albertsons does it, don't know about your area stores, but can't hurt to check.
Having a senior center organize a rummage sale, where donors can have first pick at the sale items.
Walgreen's register rewards, and how to increase the savings by buying the items with RR's in several transactions. That is, buying something with a register reward one time, then buying something else with a register reward, repeat.
Reading "The Complete Tightwad Gazette" and Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover". Both should be available at the library.
Selling handmade crafts, at seasonal sales, that can be sponsored by a senior center, etc.

Go to cosmetology or beauty colleges for haircuts.
Check with county for reduced vaccinations for pets.
Petsmart and some veteranarians do this for seniors too. Some church and social groups will help with transportation for doctor visits and may offer volunteer help for grocery shopping. Save local sstate/city tax and sometimes shipping if you order items on line. I have a friend who goes to any free lunch offered by financial consultant groups. She has the time to spare and has learned to say "No, no, no".

It went very well, and resulted in 2 more coming up. I have one in September and one in November!
